Mocktails and Conversation

By Maggie Ruvoldt

Have you ever noticed when someone says “I don’t drink”, there is usually a follow-up question or comment?

Really, ever?”, “Did you used to drink and just don’t anymore”, or if you are a woman of a certain age range “Are you pregnant?”

Tell people you are a vegetarian. Tell them you don’t particularly like a certain type of cuisine and you don’t get the follow-up. So why do we get it for alcohol?

We recently hosted our first Eve Was Framed event in partnership with Jennifer Rose Coaching called Mocktails and Conversation. It was a wonderful afternoon of women coming together to chat and try some alcohol-free drinks.

That’s right, drinks AF. And a fun AF time was had by all.

One of the highlights was the coming together of 4 women-owned businesses. Along with Eve Was Framed and Jennifer Rose Coaching, we had Jen Joseph Photography and CharcuerLeigh for catering.

You’ll see Jen Joseph’s amazing photographs showing up, in this piece, on our new website and other materials in the coming weeks. She captured wonderful candid moments and the spirit of the event. Jen is a joy to work with and her photography from newborns, families and small businesses is truly special.

If you have an event in the Maryland area and are looking for amazing food boards, we highly recommend CharcuterLeigh. The food was beautifully arranged - like a piece of art - not to mention healthy and delicious.

Now back to those follow-up questions. Strange aren’t they? When you consider that the answer is likely a deeply personal one, we wonder why people feel comfortable asking. The answer may be:

Religious reasons

  • I’ve got a medical condition

  • I have a history of a substance abuse disorder or I have a family history and chose not to drink

  • It doesn’t mix with some medication I’m currently taking

My responses include:

  • I just don’t

  • What an interesting question, why do you ask?

  • That’s kind of a personal question. Do you want to talk about why you do drink?

If you’re thinking of exploring your relationship with alcohol, I strongly recommend reaching out to Jennifer Rose. She works with women shift out of gray area drinking and “become their own hero rather than their worst enemy.” Don’t you just love that?!?

We look forward to additional Eve Was Framed events and hope you’ll join us!
